Summer Camp 2022 | Block 4: Weeks 7-8 (August 8-August 12 & August 15-August 19) | Arts Laboratory (STEAM)

March 7th, 2022

Summer Camp 2022: Block 4

Week 7: August 8-August 12  & Week 8: August 15-August 19 | Arts Laboratory (STEAM)

During weeks 7 & 8, campers will begin to make connections between the arts, science, technology, engineering, and math. How does physics affect the way marbles roll, and what kinds of patterns do they make on paper when dipped in paint? What materials can we combine to create slime? How can artists use the sun and natural materials to create pigments and dyes? These are the kinds of topics campers can expect to engage with in hands-on projects. They will be encouraged to think about the world in a new lens, focusing on interdisciplinary connections.

Campers will spend the day alternating between indoors and outdoors activities with their primary counselor and will also participate in specialty classes (such as yoga, dance, clay/ceramics, etc.) throughout the week. Markeim has designed every day differently in order to expand our campers’ minds. At the end of week 8, Markeim will host an art show featuring camper artwork from both weeks 7 & 8. Campers only attending week 7 may opt in to leave select works of theirs for the exhibit, which may be picked up from the Markeim on or after Friday, August 19.

The camp schedule is separated into two main categories and three time frames:

  1. Morning Arts Exploration | 9:00 am-12:00 pm | Ages 5-12
Morning Arts Exploration is a broad approach to the arts designed for campers aged 5-12. Campers will explore a wide range of materials, practices, and approaches ranging from drawing and painting to collage making, watercolor, and 3D sculpture. In addition to daily arts projects, campers will also engage in specialty workshops (such as dance, martial arts, or yoga) that encourage movement and expression. Outside activities will be built into the daily schedule. Campers will be split into weekly cohorts based on age and ability level. Morning Arts Exploration registration is limited to 36 campers per session.
  2. Afternoon Clay | 1:00-4:00 pm | Ages 8-14
Afternoon Clay will specifically focus on the art of clay, pottery, and ceramics and is limited to older campers, ages 8-12. Campers will have the opportunity to learn new or expand upon existing handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques, while creating a wide array of original clay pieces. Campers will also be introduced to various glazing techniques and will learn about the process of firing. Campers will be split into weekly cohorts based on clay experience and ability. Afternoon Clay registration is limited to 20 campers per session.
  3. Full Day Experience | 9:00 am-4:00 pm | Ages 8-14
The Full Day Experience is for campers aged 8-14 to participate in both Morning Arts Exploration and Afternoon Clay, with a supervised hour-long lunch and recreation break built in from 12:00-1:00 pm.

For the foreseeable future, masks will be recommended for all camp attendees. Campers will be separated into cohorts based on age and ability level and will be spaced appropriately throughout the rooms to ensure proper physical distancing.
