Exhibit will open for Haddonfield First Night, Saturday, December 31, 2016
Gala Reception: Saturday, January 28, 2017
The early 20th century was an era of experimentation in the visual arts. The exciting, creative experimentalism of the period spawned the notion that randomness could play a role in conjuring meaningful art. The artists of the Surrealist movement in the 1920’s were eager to exploit the randomness and the mystique of ‘accidental art’. They explored the unique potential of random contributions by several artists to create a single work of art. The result is a collective collage of images called the cadavre exquis or exquisite corpse, where one artist creates the head, another creates the torso, and a third creates the legs. No one knows quite how it will turn out until the work is assembled.
For almost 100 years, Exquisite Corpse projects have been the catalyst for many transformative, socially relevant and historically important books and art exhibitions all across the world.
Markeim’s artist members, as well as some nationally and internationally-known invited guest artists, will create their own Exquisite Corpses. Over 100 unique works can be seen in this one-of-a-kind exhibit.
