Opening Reception: Friday, June 9 (Details coming soon)
This juried exhibition will showcase art work from professional and amateur artists alike. Markeim is looking for work that is created by:
• Professional artists that depict untraditional subject matter or use unorthodox media.
• Trained artists that make their living doing something else.
• Untrained artists
The origins of Outsider Art can be traced back thousands of years, but it is most useful to look back to 1947, and French artist Jean Dubuffet who focused on art created by those on the “outside” of the established art scene, such as psychiatric hospital patients and children.
However, today the term is even more broadly accepted, to refer to art that is raw or rough, created by untrained artists, or created by trained artists using unconventional media, or depicting subject matter that is outside the usual genres.
This exhibition is inviting all artists, trained or untrained, to submit pieces that meet at least one of the criteria listed above. It is sure to be a unique and fascinating exhibition.
