Opening Reception: Friday, October 14, 2016 7:00-9:00 PM
Markeim is thrilled to again be exhibiting the artwork of the talented artists who teach in New Jersey. The 6th Annual Art Educators of New Jersey Exhibition is scheduled from October 11 through October 31, 2016. All arts educators currently teaching in the state, whether it be in preschool, K thru 12, undergraduate or postgraduate programs, are eligible to display their work. This exhibition will be a wonderful opportunity to inspire the community and your students with your creativity and talent. The exhibit also provides Markeim Arts Center an opportunity to honor and recognize these amazing teachers and their work.
Guest artist and juror: Monica Kane
Monica Kane’s art is a reflection of the world within her. Her drawings reflect small pieces of nature, fragile and impermanent. The drawing travels back and forth between revealing her process, revealing the subject, and revealing herself. Kane’s mixed media sculptures explore the ongoing themes of home dwelling and the fragile nature of our existence. She constructs each piece in an attempt to strip away all but the essential experience — a sense of well being that may be precariously delicate of striving embodied by a structure that stretches to the sky filled with light and space and in spite of the rawness of harsh realities. They provide a place where imagination can roam.
Monica is a former member of the Philadelphia Center for the Book, and a current member of The Philadelphia Sculptors. Her work is in the collections of Free Library of Philadelphia Print and Picture Collection, The Newark Public Library, Special Collections Department, Newark, New Jersey, and Oberlin College, Clarence Ward Art Library. She has a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, and a M.A. from Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado. She has also completed coursework at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Parsons School of Design, and the Alfred Ceramics School, Alfred, New York
